An exotic animal caregiver visited both the Primary and IMYC classes, bringing seven animals to help us explore the special characteristics of each. Among the animals brought were a Kenyan sand boa, an eyelash gecko, an African hedgehog, a bearded dragon, a boa constrictor, a millipede, and a Spurland turtle.
Our students even had the opportunity to touch and hold them! The final animal was a real highlight, as everyone got a chance to hold it, which was very exciting!
For IMYC, this visit served as the entry point for the theme of Courage and Resilience. The students showed courage by appreciating—and even holding—animals that are often perceived as dangerous. When handled correctly, these animals are actually quite friendly. The experience also encouraged resilience, as it challenged students to face their fears and step out of their comfort zones. For many of us, being near reptiles, or handling them, can be intimidating.
By engaging with these animals in a safe and controlled environment, students practiced managing their emotions, which helped them build mental toughness and adaptability. These experiences provide valuable life lessons, making future challenges feel more approachable, as students have already learned how to push past initial fears. Both Primary and IMYC students embraced the challenge with Courage and Resilience.
