A reflection on history and hope.

On Monday 27 January 2025, the Eerde community gathered in a solemn assembly to remember the victims of the Holocaust and reflect on the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the Netherlands. This poignant occasion served as a reminder of the importance of learning from history to build a more just and peaceful future.

The event held particular significance for our school as we honored the memory of 14 Jewish children who were once part of our community. These young lives, full of promise, were tragically cut short by the horrors of the Holocaust. By remembering them, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that such atrocities are never forgotten.

We were deeply honored to welcome the Mayor of Ommen, Mr. Van der Zwan, whose presence underscored the importance of remembrance and the role that local communities play in fostering understanding and reconciliation. His words emphasized the responsibility we all share in standing against intolerance and promoting peace.

Beyond historical reflection, the event also served as a moment to acknowledge the conflicts and struggles that continue to shape our world today. As an international school that embraces diverse cultures and perspectives, we recognize that our shared humanity binds us together. Regardless of political views, our community stands united in the desire for peace and well-being for all global citizens.

Through thoughtful discussions and moments of reflection, students and staff reinforced their commitment to promoting tolerance, understanding, and compassion. The event was a solemn yet inspiring reminder that rejecting hatred in all its forms is a responsibility we all share.

As future leaders and change-makers, our students are encouraged to use their knowledge and compassion to shape a better world. Though we may be a small school, the aspirations of our students are vast, and their potential to drive positive change is unlimited.
