Last week was the first running of the Eerde Maths week! Why, last week, I hear you ask? Because on the American Calendar the 14th of March reads as 3.14, the start of a very special number in mathematics. Months before I had several brainwaves of activities and accidentally ended up with a week’s worth of lunch time activities!

Monday: A Maths Treasure Hunt!
Students were tasked in seeking clues hidden around the school grounds and using those clues to solve a maths question. That maths answer was the passcode to unlock a treasure chest filled with chocolate!

Tuesday: Guess the Number of Sweets in the Jar!
A classic game, students simply guess the number of sweets in the jar; the closest to the correct number wins the jar and the sweets!

Wednesday: Maths Competition!
A series of quick maths questions to see which student has the quickest maths brain!

Thursday: Maths in Art!
Mr. Habing and Kate led origami folding activities (with surprising connections to maths), Mr. Robert led a fascinating session on the equations for flowers! Maths and art are surprisingly linked in so many ways.

Friday: Pie Eating Competition!
Given that Friday the 10th of March was indeed Pi day, we held pie competitions! The first was a pie making competition, late thursday night students baked their pies, which were eaten and voted on in the morning break time! The second was a pie speed eating competition! No hands allowed! Fastest to eat their slices of whipped cream and pie wins!!
