On Wednesday, 28 May, the Pre-IB and IB visual art students travelled to Amsterdam for a couple of gallery visits.

First stop was the Stedelijk Museum of modern and contemporary art and design, where we explored the dazzling collection of work and endeavoured in tasks to refine observational and visual literacy skills.

In the afternoon, we went to the Rijksmuseum for a lecture, a viewing of the American Photography exhibition, and participated in a photographic practical workshop. The Financial Times review of the American Photography Exhibition stated: “The show’s real achievement is highlighting the unknown and thus surprising us still with America’s immense diversity, contradictions, fragility”.

The trip was invaluable for the art students, as the professional and cultural exposure is essential in grounding and inspiring them to become more aware, critically engaged, and reflective in their own conceptual and creative practice.
