In History, our students have been learning about the Crusades: how they began, what motivated people to join them, and the deeper reasons behind this major period in European and Middle Eastern history. Students explored the complex motivations of various groups: from the poor seeking hope and purpose, to the wealthy pursuing land and power, from merchants driven by trade interests, to clergy inspired by religious zeal or political influence.
Through research and discussion, the students examined not only the events themselves but also the long-term impact of the Crusades on our world. Even though these events took place over 800 years ago, their legacy still shapes aspects of modern society, particularly in how ideas were used to influence, control, or unite large groups of people. Students reflected on how belief systems and promises were used to persuade the masses, an important concept that resonates even today.
A special mention goes to Cillian, who delivered an excellent research presentation on the legacy of the Crusades. He offered thoughtful personal reflections, arguing that the overall impact may have been more negative than positive. His work showed a strong understanding of the topic, as well as an ability to think critically and independently.
Well done, Cillian! It was fantastic to see your enthusiasm and engagement throughout the lessons. Keep up the great work!
