History of Eerde

The original castle dates back to the 18th century. The castle was first used as the setting for an international school in 1934 and the high-tech school facilities were added in 2011.

The international school has a quite eventful history. Between 1934 and 1943 it was housed by the Quaker School Eerde. Eerde castle was made available to the Dutch Quakers as a school and as a refuge for German and Jewish children persecuted by the Nazi regime. It was run as a boarding school until it had to be closed in 1943. During the second world war, we lost 14 students. This is and always will be part of our history and life at Eerde. We honour the students we have lost every year during national holocaust day with a memorial service at the monument that is still precent at our campus.

After the Second World War, the reconstruction of the Quaker School Eerde began. The Quaker School in Eerde continued its work until 1958. One of the former headmasters returned and continued to expand an international school, from which today's International School Eerde emerged.

Culture & Nature

Eerde’s location amongst the forest, fields, and streams of rural Overijssel make it the perfect location for a variety of outdoor pursuits. Nature trails crisscross the landscape for miles all around Eerde Castle, offering students ample opportunity to hike, bike, and camp.
